The Shujaa wa Maendeleo na Ustawi wa Jamii Tanzania (SMAUJATA) organization in Shinyanga Region has strongly condemned the brutal attack on a woman, Ms. Esther Matalanga, a resident of Banduka Street, Ndala Ward, Shinyanga Municipality, who was assaulted and had her eyes gouged out. The organization has called on the government, through its security agencies, to search for and arrest the suspect so that legal action can be taken.
This was revealed by the Secretary of SMAUJATA in Shinyanga Region, Mr. Daniel Patrick Kapaya, after visiting and offering condolences to the victim, Ms. Esther, who is currently receiving treatment at Kolandoto Hospital.
The incident occurred on August 13, 2024, in Banduka Street, Ndala Ward, Shinyanga Municipality.
Mr. Kapaya described the act as barbaric and a violation of human rights. He urged the community to continue working together to eliminate such incidents, emphasizing that the government should use its security forces to locate and arrest the suspect, so that legal action can be taken as a deterrent to others with similar malicious intentions.

“We are here at Kolandoto Hospital to visit the woman who was brutally attacked and had her eyes gouged out. On behalf of our National Chairman, Mr. Sospeter Bulugu, and our Regional Chairperson, Ms. Nabila Kisendi, we strongly condemn such incidents and hope they never happen again, as they are a violation of human rights,” Kapaya said.
“SMAUJATA in Shinyanga Region has observed that acts of violence continue, including those driven by jealousy, suicides, and other forms of torture. We strongly oppose such incidents, especially in Shinyanga Region. We urge citizens or the community at large to report such incidents to local government leaders, gender desks, or to SMAUJATA by calling the toll-free number 116 for assistance,” Kapaya added.
He further noted, “It seems that many married couples face significant challenges in their families, and many suffer silently. Eventually, these challenges result in tragedies like this one. We, SMAUJATA Shinyanga Region, condemn such acts, and we urge couples or families experiencing such challenges to seek help early to prevent severe consequences like those suffered by Ms. Esther.”
