AIR Mauritius has launched the first entry point to Tanzania in its quest to enable tourism, trade and unlock mobility and greatly affix travel options in the East African region.

The airline’s new gateway in the region is part of its expansion plan into the land of Kilimanjaro where the nation has projected increase in tourist arrivals from 1.2million to 2million in 2020.

As a result tourism earnings will jump to $3.6billion up from the current $2billion.

Speaking at the launching ceremony in Dar es Salaam, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Works, Transport and Communication Prof Faustine Kamuzora the government has welcomed the initiative by Air Mauritius to launch weekly flights to Mauritius.

“This is the good starting point between the two countries. We expect the airline will help foster tourism and trade between the two countries,” the PS went on to say.

Already Air Mauritius has been affiliating with Kenya Airways (KQ) introducing its daily flights to Nairobi and in 48 hours earlier it also launched its weekly flight to Maputo (Mozambique).

The airline Chairman Dr Arjoon Suddhoo told a press conference in the city, the introduction of the Mauritius—Dar es Salaam route will see an increase of flow of tourists and visitors between the two countries.

“We’re bringing two continents (Asia and Africa) very closer. There are lots to learn from each other but for the 15 years of our existence we want to support export processing zones and tourism expansion,” the Chairman said adding “last year there were over 3.2million arrivals in Mauritius.”

The chairman promised continued investment in innovation and services to maintain an accredited status in the air transport industry.

Raju Jaddoo, Secretary General for Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry said the company will be discussing with Tanzanian airline operators to introduce upcountry routes.
