The construction and refurbishment of Kariakoo market is at 93% completion and is set to open in August this year.
The main two-storey Kariakoo market was destroyed by fire in July 2021. The extension, known as the coconut market, has been rebuilt into a nine-floor structure. The market, renowned in East and Central Africa, is expected to commence operations in August, operating 24 hours a day with new features like banks and CCTV cameras.

Dr. Toba Nguvila, the Dar es Salaam Regional Administrative Secretary, mentioned that the remaining construction involves installing ventilation equipment and two elevators, slated to begin next month. Measures are being taken by TANESCO and the Fire Brigade to ensure security and safety, including installing floodlights for day and night operations.
Additionally, CCTV cameras will be installed in the market vicinity for enhanced security. The upgraded Kariakoo market will house four banks and three ATMs for convenient transactions, ensuring cash handling safety.
With fire hydrants for emergencies, the market will accommodate around 3000 traders compared to the previous 1600. Dr. Nguvila highlighted efforts to allocate spaces to traders smoothly, forming a committee to assist previous traders and new applicants.
Kariakoo, the largest market in East and Central Africa, serves the entire region. After the fire incident in July 2021, where 224 traders suffered losses, the government prioritized rebuilding the market instead of allowing traders to return.
An allocation of 28 billion Tanzanian shillings was earmarked for the construction and renovation project that commenced in January 2022.
