The National Airline has praised the government’s substantial investments, which have significantly enhanced the company’s ability to compete both domestically and internationally.
In a statement issued from Dar Es Salaam, the state-run airline highlighted the efforts of the sixth phase government under President Samia Suluhu Hassan, which have been pivotal in revitalizing the airline.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration has been instrumental in strengthening the airline since she took office three years ago. The government’s strategic investments include the purchase of new aircraft and modernization of existing ones, which have bolstered the airline’s operational capabilities. The recent acquisition of a Boeing 737-9 Max, adding to the fleet now totaling 15 aircraft, marks a significant milestone in this revamping effort
Prime Minister Kassimu Majaliwa underscored the importance of these investments during the reception ceremony of the new aircraft, revealing plans for a dedicated terminal at Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA). This initiative aims to streamline operations and improve efficiency, positioning the airline to better compete in the aviation market
Despite these advancements, the airline continues to face several operational challenges. These include high operating costs, availability of spare parts, and a shortage of pilots. To address these issues, the government has recommended hiring consultants to review the company’s structure and operations. This step aims to find sustainable solutions to reduce costs and improve efficiency

The National Airline is also tackling the pilot shortage by collaborating with the National Institute of Transport (NIT) to establish an aviation faculty. This initiative is expected to train more pilots and address the long-term needs of the airline. Additionally, the airline has been proactive in sourcing essential spare parts despite global supply chain disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic
The fleet expansion is part of a broader strategy to enhance the airline’s service offerings. The new Boeing 737-9 Max, capable of medium-haul flights, will enable the airline to expand its domestic network to new destinations such as Pemba, Tanga, Mafia, Nachingwea, and Musoma. This expansion is expected to boost tourism and contribute to economic growth in these regions
The airline’s participation in international events, such as the Magical Kenya Tourist Expo, further underscores its commitment to excellence and regional connectivity. Such engagements are crucial for fostering stronger ties and promoting tourism across East Africa
The concerted efforts by the government to invest in the National Airline have yielded positive results, enabling it to strengthen its market position and enhance service quality. As the airline continues to address operational challenges and expand its fleet, it is well-positioned to achieve greater heights in the competitive aviation industry.
