Tanzania’s Deputy Minister for Energy, Judidhi Kapinga, has announced that recent investments in the energy sector over the past three years will enhance electricity trade among East African Power Pool (EAPP) member states.

Kapinga made the remarks on December 9, during a meeting in Mombasa, Kenya, attended by EAPP member countries and stakeholders from the electricity sub-sector.

“Our electricity generation relied heavily on natural gas in the past. However, with the commissioning of the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project, now producing approximately 1,175 megawatts, we have shifted significantly toward hydropower,” Kapinga stated.

She emphasized Tanzania’s commitment to diversifying its energy sources through a mixed energy strategy, blending hydropower, gas, and renewable energy. Kapinga urged EAPP member states to increase investments in renewable energy, citing its importance as a clean and sustainable power source.

Regarding rural electrification, Kapinga revealed that Tanzania is on track to achieve universal electricity access for all 12,318 villages by 2025. She highlighted that more than 99% of villages have already been connected to electricity, demonstrating significant progress.

The Deputy Minister also announced Tanzania’s intention to join the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), enhancing its capacity to trade electricity with other African countries. This move, she said, will position Tanzania as a key player in the regional energy market, offering reliable power supplies to its neighbors.

“Tanzania’s ongoing investments in energy infrastructure ensure stable and dependable electricity, which will benefit not only our country but also other African nations,” Kapinga added.

She acknowledged the critical role of development partners in supporting Tanzania’s energy projects, noting that much of the progress has been achieved through collaborative efforts.

The Mombasa meeting underscored regional efforts to foster sustainable energy solutions, strengthen interconnectivity, and advance economic growth. With its significant investments, Tanzania is set to play a pivotal role in the region’s energy future, driving development and collaboration across borders.
