President Samia Suluhu Hassan has officially handed over modern fishing boats to local fishermen.
The event, held in Pangani, Tanga, on February 26, 2025, is part of a nationwide initiative aimed at empowering fishing communities and promoting sustainable fishing practices.
Speaking at the event, President Samia underscored the government’s commitment to strengthening the blue economy by providing modern equipment that will help fishermen increase productivity and improve their livelihoods.
“Fishing is a vital source of income for many Tanzanians, and to make it more profitable, we must invest in better tools. These modern boats will enable our fishermen to go further into the ocean and lakes, increase their catch, and improve their earnings,” she said.
During the event, President Samia handed over 35 large fishing boats and 60 auxiliary boats to fishermen in Tanga. The distribution is part of a broader national program that will see 120 large boats and 118 auxiliary boats allocated across the country, benefiting fishermen along the Indian Ocean, Lake Victoria, Lake Tanganyika, and Lake Nyasa.

A New Era for Fishermen
For years, local fishermen have struggled with outdated equipment and small boats, making it difficult to reach deep waters where fish are more abundant. Many fishermen at the event welcomed the initiative, expressing gratitude for the government’s efforts to modernize the sector.
“These boats will change our lives. We have been using small wooden boats that limit how far we can go. Now, with these modern boats, we can catch more fish and support our families better,” said one fisherman.
The government’s goal is not only to provide better fishing equipment but also to ensure sustainability in the sector. Officials emphasized that along with the boats, fishermen will receive training on modern fishing techniques and how to protect marine resources.
Commitment to the Blue Economy
The initiative is part of Tanzania’s broader strategy to harness the potential of the blue economy, which focuses on sustainable use of ocean and lake resources for economic growth. The Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries has been leading efforts to improve fishing infrastructure, ensuring fishermen have access to the right tools to compete in both local and international markets.
As the distribution continues to other regions, the government is working closely with local authorities to ensure the boats reach the intended beneficiaries and are used effectively. Fishermen are encouraged to embrace this opportunity, not just to increase their income but also to contribute to Tanzania’s growing economy.
