Four suspects have been arrested in connection with the violent abduction and gang rape of Bruce John Kajira, also known as Bruce John Chawa, on September 12, 2024.
The arrested individuals, identified as Abdul Hassan Athman, Esther Muthoni, Violet Adera, and Haji Babu Ndau Mohamed, appeared at Shanzu Law Courts on Monday, facing charges of conspiracy to commit a felony, abduction, gang rape, and assault causing bodily harm.
Haji Babu, who is reportedly a boda boda operator involved in the crime, was apprehended in Lukenya, Athi River, while attempting to escape on a Dreamline bus. Athman was found in possession of a motorcycle believed to have been used during the incident. The arrests followed a coordinated operation by detectives from the Operations Support Unit and DCI Coast.
Investigations revealed that a gang of over 10 individuals forcibly entered Kajira’s home in Bamburi Mwisho, Mombasa County, under the pretense of taking him to apologize to the Mombasa Governor for a social media post that was perceived as insulting. Kajira was then abducted, brutally assaulted, and gang-raped before being abandoned unconscious in a remote area.
The suspects have pleaded not guilty and are currently held at Shimo la Tewa Prison. The court will rule on their bail application on September 26, 2024.
