Tundu Lissu has emerged victorious, replacing Freeman Mbowe as the party’s new chairman. The election took place at the Mlimani City Conference Hall on January 22, 2025, following a tense few days of deliberations.
Lissu’s win marks the end of Mbowe’s long leadership, which spanned 21 years. Mbowe, who took over as chairman in 2003, led the party through several challenging political battles. However, in this latest leadership contest, Lissu, the party’s former deputy chairman, triumphed, making him Chadema’s fourth chairman in its history.
The election process began earlier in the week, with delegates gathering on Monday to kick off the assembly. By Wednesday, the atmosphere was charged with anticipation as supporters of both Lissu and Mbowe anxiously awaited the outcome. Though the final results were not officially announced, celebrations broke out in the hall, fueled by rumors and unofficial reports suggesting that Lissu had secured the win.
Before the announcement, the tension was palpable. Supporters of Lissu, visibly excited, began congratulating each other, sharing hugs and smiles, even before the results were confirmed. Meanwhile, those backing Mbowe remained quieter, keeping a more subdued presence as the vote counting took place.
In the moments following the unofficial reports, Lissu’s camp was seen celebrating, and it wasn’t long before the enthusiasm spread throughout the room. Mnyika, the party’s Secretary-General, had to intervene, calling for order as emotions ran high.

In a graceful acknowledgment of the outcome, Mbowe took to social media to concede the race. Posting on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote: “I fully accept the decision of the General Assembly election of our party, Chadema, concluded this morning. I congratulate Hon. Tundu Lissu and his team for being entrusted with the leadership of the party. I wish them all the best as they move the party forward.”
While the results are still to be officially confirmed, the election has already marked a major turning point for Chadema. With Lissu at the helm, the party is poised to enter a new chapter, one that may redefine its future as a leading opposition force in Tanzanian politics.
