The Tanzania Port Authority (TPA) has expressed strong optimism regarding the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), anticipating that it will significantly contribute to the achievement of port expansion and efficiency goals. T
his sentiment was articulated by Plasduce Mbossa, the TPA Director General, during the launch of the corporate customer service week in Dar es Salaam yesterday.
Mbossa noted that the integration of the SGR into the transport network will stimulate development not only within Tanzania but also benefit neighboring countries. He explained that the SGR is expected to facilitate seamless connectivity between the port and various inland destinations, thus enhancing the overall logistics framework in the region.
He highlighted that substantial investments at the port are intended to enhance competitiveness and maximize the SGR’s potential for cargo transportation. The TPA has outlined several initiatives aimed at optimizing the use of the railway, including modernizing loading and unloading facilities and improving storage capabilities at the port. These measures are designed to ensure that the port can handle increased cargo volumes efficiently.
Mbossa specifically pointed to the SGR electric train project as a key initiative poised to accelerate economic growth. He remarked, “The construction of the SGR will enable faster cargo transport and boost port productivity, particularly for Dar es Salaam, which handles large shipments from various countries.” This increased efficiency in cargo handling is expected to reduce turnaround times for vessels, thereby improving service delivery and attracting more shipping lines to the port.

In addition to enhancing port operations, the SGR is anticipated to lower transportation costs for businesses and importers, which could result in lower prices for consumers. The TPA’s strategic focus on leveraging the SGR is part of a broader vision to transform the Dar es Salaam port into a leading logistics hub in East Africa.
By improving transport efficiency and connectivity, the TPA aims to position the port as a pivotal logistics hub in the region, thereby attracting more trade and investments. The TPA remains committed to leveraging the SGR’s capabilities to transform the cargo transport landscape and enhance the overall operational performance of the port.
