The presidents of France and Russia held their first phone conversation in more than two and a half years.
The discussion, which lasted over two hours, focused on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine as well as broader international concerns.
During the call, French President Emmanuel Macron urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the fighting in Ukraine. Macron emphasized the urgent need for a peaceful resolution and stressed the importance of dialogue to bring stability back to the region. The war in Ukraine, which has caused widespread destruction and humanitarian suffering, remains a top concern for global leaders and organizations like the United Nations.
Putin, however, placed the blame on Western countries, accusing them of provoking the conflict through their policies and support for Ukraine. According to the statement from the Kremlin, Putin insisted that any peace agreement must be comprehensive, addressing the underlying causes of the crisis rather than merely halting the violence temporarily.
The French presidential office, the Élysée Palace, confirmed that both leaders agreed to continue their communication, especially regarding Ukraine and Iran. This decision marks a cautious but hopeful step toward renewed diplomacy after years of strained relations and limited dialogue.

The war in Ukraine, which began in 2014 with Russia’s annexation of Crimea and escalated dramatically with the 2022 full-scale invasion, has reshaped security dynamics across Europe and beyond. The renewed phone contact between Macron and Putin is seen by many analysts as a potentially positive sign that diplomatic channels can still be reopened, despite the challenges. This conversation could also impact broader international relations, including ongoing efforts to address tensions involving Iran and other geopolitical hotspots.
Maintaining dialogue between major powers is critical for managing conflicts and preventing further escalation, as history has shown through diplomatic efforts such as the Helsinki Accords.
