Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has confirmed plans to run for re-election in the upcoming January 2026 general elections.
The 80-year-old leader is expected to pick up his nomination forms this Saturday, signaling his intention to defend his position as the National Chairman of the ruling party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM), and to represent the party as its presidential flagbearer in the upcoming elections.
The 2026 general elections will see Ugandans vote for both the President and Members of Parliament.
Museveni has been in power since 1986, making him one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders. His decision to run again comes amid growing political debates within Uganda over term limits, democratic transition, and leadership succession.
While Museveni maintains strong influence within the NRM and among various constituencies, his continued leadership has faced criticism from opposition figures and civil society groups who advocate for change and democratic reforms.
More details on Museveni’s nomination process and the NRM internal roadmap are expected in the coming days as Uganda gears up for another closely watched electoral cycle.
