Under Tanzanian law, abortions are illegal except when the mother’s life is at risk, forcing many women to seek dangerous alternatives. The incident has ignited conversations about the need for better healthcare options for women and single mothers, who face extreme challenges in raising children without adequate support.

Local authorities have opened an investigation into Irene’s death, with initial reports pointing to complications from an unsafe abortion. The surviving infant has been placed in the care of local social services as the investigation continues.
