UNICEF has applauded the government’s steadfast dedication. Lawrence Oundo, UNICEF’s Representative to Tanzania, emphasized the critical importance of this commitment in tackling the persisting challenge of maternal mortality, attributed largely to preventable complications during pregnancy and childbirth.

Oundo’s remarks came during the official handover ceremony of newly constructed and renovated health centers in Dodoma Region. The Haneti, Soya, and Chipanga health centers, located in Chamwino, Chemba, and Bahi Districts respectively, were unveiled with much fanfare. Beyond being mere infrastructure handovers, these facilities signify hope and promise a brighter future for Tanzanian families, Oundo stated.

“These health centers represent more than just buildings; they are symbols of hope and essential lifelines for communities,” Oundo remarked. Each center is equipped with state-of-the-art amenities, boasting 50-bed maternity wards, postnatal care units, modern laboratories, and surgical theaters. These upgrades aim to ensure that every woman and child receives the critical care necessary for their health and well-being.

The initiative underscores Tanzania’s commitment to achieving sustainable development goals, particularly in healthcare and reducing maternal mortality rates. UNICEF, alongside other partners, continues to support such efforts through technical expertise and financial assistance, fostering a collaborative approach towards achieving universal health coverage.

“The transformation of these health centers is a testament to the government’s determination to prioritize healthcare delivery, especially for vulnerable populations,” Oundo added. He stressed the need for sustained investment and community involvement to maintain and maximize the impact of these upgraded facilities.

With ongoing commitment and collaborative efforts, the country moves closer to realizing its vision of a healthier future for all Tanzanians.
