Tanzania is gearing up to transform its freight transport system with the upcoming launch of the standard gauge railway (SGR) cargo service, expected to begin in April.
This development has stirred excitement among business leaders who are hopeful it will bring faster and more affordable logistics across the country.
Last December, Tanzania received a major shipment of 264 state-of-the-art freight wagons at the Dar es Salaam Port. These wagons, built in China, are part of a much larger order of 1,430 units designed to boost the country’s cargo transport capabilities along the SGR line. Among them, 200 wagons are tailored for containerized cargo, while 64 are designed for loose goods.
Since their arrival, the wagons have undergone extensive testing to ensure they meet the required standards. They have proven to be capable of reaching speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour. With these tests nearing completion, officials are optimistic that the SGR will soon be fully operational. This will not only lower transport costs but also reduce road congestion, benefiting both businesses and consumers.
The introduction of the SGR cargo service promises to make a significant impact on Tanzania’s economy. Industries such as agriculture, mining, and construction will enjoy a faster, safer, and more efficient way to move goods.

In addition, the service is expected to strengthen regional trade by enhancing connectivity with neighboring countries.
Freddy Mwanjala, a spokesperson for the Tanzanian Railway Corporation (TRC), confirmed that the testing process is nearly finished. “Once the wagons are fully tested and running at 120kph, we’ll be ready to launch,” he said. “Our target is to begin operations within the next few months, and once we receive final approval from the Land Transport Regulatory Authority (LATRA), the service will be up and running.”
Business leaders are especially excited about the potential benefits for regions like the Lake Zone and Western Zone. With the new service, goods will be delivered directly to Dodoma, eliminating the need for the long journey through Dar es Salaam. This change will save both time and money, making it easier for businesses to operate efficiently.
