Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, Dr. Doto Biteko, has directed the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) to accelerate the implementation of energy projects to connect Kigoma to the national power grid by the end of 2024.
The move aims to reduce the region’s dependence on expensive diesel-generated electricity.
During a foundation stone-laying ceremony for the 49.5 MW Malagarasi hydropower project, Dr. Biteko emphasized that the connection to the grid would address power reliability issues in Kigoma, which has long relied on heavy fuel for electricity generation. He noted that the government currently spends TZS 35 billion annually on fuel for generators, while the revenue collected from power generation is only TZS 16 billion, leading to a significant financial burden on TANESCO.
The Malagarasi hydropower project, along with other transmission initiatives such as the 132 kV line from Igamba to Kidahwe and the Kidahwe substation, is expected to play a key role in stabilizing electricity supply. The government’s focus on these projects aligns with its broader strategy of reducing operational losses and promoting industrial growth in the region.

The shutdown of diesel-powered generators in regions not yet connected to the grid is also part of this larger national plan to ensure that Kigoma, along with other regions like Rukwa and Katavi, will benefit from reliable and cleaner electricity by 2025 .
The grid connection is expected to improve both the economic development and the quality of life in the region, which is a critical part of the national vision of achieving sustainable energy solutions across Tanzania.
