Tanzania Fuel Prices Rise Amid Middle East Tensions

In Dar es Salaam, the maximum retail price is now Sh4,057 per litre for petrol, Sh4,086 for diesel and Sh4,067 for kerosene.
October 7, 2026

The Tanzanian Government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring reliable fuel supplies and maintaining affordable prices despite continued volatility in global oil markets linked to renewed tensions in the Middle East.

The government’s position comes as international disruptions affecting oil production, availability and transportation have pushed up the cost of refined petroleum products, with Tanzania sourcing a significant share of its fuel supplies through international markets.

According to new price caps announced by the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) on October 7, 2026, the prices of petrol, diesel and kerosene have increased in October after declining for three consecutive months.

In Dar es Salaam, the maximum retail price is now Sh4,057 per litre for petrol, Sh4,086 for diesel and Sh4,067 for kerosene.

In Tanga, the maximum retail prices are Sh4,123 for petrol, Sh4,152 for diesel and Sh4,133 for kerosene per litre.

Meanwhile, in Mtwara, petrol will sell at a maximum of Sh4,170 per litre, diesel at Sh4,199 and kerosene at Sh4,180.

EWURA said the new prices take effect from October 7 and reflect changes in international petroleum prices and related market conditions.

The latest increase comes after a period of declining domestic fuel prices, highlighting the strong connection between Tanzania’s local pump prices and developments in the global oil market.

The renewed instability in the Middle East has raised concerns across international energy markets because the region plays a major role in global oil production and transportation. Any disruption to supply routes or production can place upward pressure on crude oil and refined petroleum prices.

For Tanzania, higher fuel prices can have wider economic implications because petroleum products are essential for transportation, agriculture, manufacturing and other commercial activities. Changes in fuel costs can also affect the prices of goods and services by increasing transportation and operating expenses.

The government has therefore stressed the importance of maintaining fuel availability while responding to external market pressures.

EWURA also reminded consumers to request and keep receipts after purchasing fuel at service stations, saying receipts provide evidence of transactions and can help consumers address complaints or disputes involving fuel purchases.

The latest price adjustments place renewed attention on global energy developments and their impact on Tanzanian households and businesses, as authorities continue monitoring international market conditions.
