Indian billionaire and philanthropist Sudha Reddy made a striking global fashion statement at the 2026 Met Gala after wearing a $15 million tanzanite necklace sourced from Tanzania, placing one of Africa’s rarest gemstones at the center of one of the world’s most watched cultural events.
The centerpiece of her appearance was a 550-carat violet-blue tanzanite pendant known as the “Queen of Mererani,” a reference to the famed mining region in the Mererani Hills of Tanzania, the only place in the world where tanzanite is commercially mined. The gemstone is widely regarded as one of the rarest colored stones on Earth, prized for its deep blue-violet hue and limited geographic origin.
The necklace, valued at approximately $15 million, was drawn from Reddy’s private jewellery collection and featured a Victorian-style chain encrusted with rose-cut diamonds. The combination of historical design and modern high jewellery craftsmanship made it one of the most talked-about pieces on the red carpet.
Reddy paired the necklace with a custom-designed gown by renowned Indian fashion designer Manish Malhotra, blending traditional Indian textile influences with contemporary couture aesthetics. Fashion analysts say such moments elevate both the designer and the origin of the gemstone, linking global luxury markets more directly with African mining regions.
Reddy completed her look with additional high jewellery pieces, including emerald and diamond rings, further emphasizing a theme of opulence and artistic expression. However, it was the tanzanite necklace that dominated attention, both for its scale and its symbolic connection to Tanzania.
