Deputy Minister of Livestock and Fisheries, Alexander Mnyeti, has called on the Regional Member of the Central Committee of the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) in Rukwa, Sultan Saleh Seif, to respect the government’s decision to halt fishing activities in Lake Tanganyika. Mnyeti criticized Seif’s announcement encouraging citizens to fish using hooks, deeming it as mere self-indulgence.
The government’s statement comes days after Seif, during a public meeting held on June 26, 2024, in Ninde Village, Ninde Ward, Nkasi District, Rukwa Region, informed residents that they were permitted to fish using hooks along the lake’s shores.
The government imposed a fishing ban on Lake Tanganyika from May 15 to August 15 this year to allow the lake to recuperate and enable fish to reproduce, ultimately benefiting the fishermen who rely on the lake for their livelihoods.
However, in a clarifying statement to a media outlet, Seif claimed that during the public meeting, he contacted the Member of Parliament for Nkasi South, Vincent Mbogo, who communicated the residents’ complaints about fishing for small fish. Mbogo reportedly informed Seif that residents were allowed to fish using hooks along the lake’s shores, but not nets.

Nonetheless, on July 1, 2024, Mnyeti suggested that the MP might have submitted a request to the ministry for residents to use hooks, which was denied. He urged patience until the fishing ban is lifted on August 15.
Mnyeti emphasized that the government sees no need to argue with MNEC Seif, who announced to residents that they could use hooks in the lake. He stated that the regulations set forth by the government remain in effect and are being adhered to by the local residents.
“We have no time to argue with this MNEC. His announcements are just for his amusement, as residents have respected the government’s decision to halt fishing activities in the lake, and they are seeing the benefits,” Mnyeti said.
