Fishermen at Kawe Beach in Dar es Salaam are appealing to the government for assistance in improving their livelihoods, particularly by building a modern fish market in the area.
They believe that such a market would help them attract more customers and create an environment conducive to growing their business and improving their economic standing.
During a visit to Kawe Beach by Media Wire Express, several local fishermen shared their concerns and hopes for the future. Jofley Lazaro, one of the fishermen, explained, “We really need a good fish market here. When we return from fishing, it would be much easier to sell our catch if we had a nearby market. It would make everything more efficient and bring in more customers.”
The fishermen also emphasized the need for modern fishing equipment to make their work safer and more productive. Eliud Evadius, another fisherman, highlighted the challenges faced by small-scale fishermen: “We are asking the government to help us get modern equipment. It would make our work easier, safer, and help us catch more fish, improving our overall output.”

In addition to the call for improved infrastructure and equipment, the fishermen voiced the need for greater collaboration and support from the government in terms of financial assistance. They expressed the desire for access to small loans that could help them grow their businesses and improve their fishing practices.
Thobias Damian, a fisherman at Kawe Beach, also encouraged local youth to take charge of their future. “Young people often complain about the lack of jobs, but there are opportunities right here. It’s up to us to take the initiative and make the most of what’s available.”
