The government, has successfully completed a comprehensive overhaul of weighbridge facilities along the Morogoro-Iringa highway, undertaken by the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS).
This ambitious infrastructure project, costing 1.9 billion Tanzanian shillings, includes significant upgrades to existing weighbridge systems and the construction of a new state-of-the-art facility at Mikumi. These enhancements are poised to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance efficiency along critical transport routes.
The initiative was prompted by escalating levels of production and transportation activities along the Tanzam highway, revealing the inadequacies of the existing weighbridge in handling the increasing volume of vehicles. As a result, the government decided to modernize the infrastructure to meet current demands and ensure seamless traffic flow.
Central to the project’s improvements are advanced sensor technologies installed at the weighbridges. These sensors are designed to accurately measure and report vehicle weights, facilitating streamlined operations. Vehicles compliant with weight regulations can now bypass the weighbridge, optimizing transit times and reducing operational delays. Those exceeding weight limits are directed to undergo weighing procedures, promoting adherence to transport regulations and enhancing road safety.
