Ukraine Approves New Government Under Koretskyi Leadership

July 17, 2026

Ukraine’s parliament has approved a new government led by Sergii Koretskyi, completing a major political transition as the country continues to manage the challenges of the ongoing war with Russia and mounting economic pressures.

The Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s parliament, voted to endorse Koretskyi as the country’s new Prime Minister, paving the way for him to form and lead a new cabinet.

Koretskyi, who previously held senior positions in Ukraine’s energy sector, including serving as head of the state energy company Naftogaz, enters office at a critical moment for the country, with energy security, economic stability and wartime governance among the government’s key priorities.

The parliamentary vote approved the new government lineup but did not include the ministers responsible for defence and foreign affairs. Under Ukraine’s constitutional system, those two strategic positions follow a different appointment process, with candidates nominated by the president rather than selected through the same parliamentary approval procedure.

The appointment of a new prime minister comes after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy moved to reshape the government, seeking to strengthen leadership and improve coordination as Ukraine continues its defence efforts and diplomatic engagement with international partners.

Koretskyi’s background in the energy sector is expected to influence his administration’s priorities, particularly as Ukraine continues efforts to protect and rebuild critical infrastructure affected by the war.

The new government now faces the task of maintaining public services, supporting the economy, strengthening national resilience and managing relations with Ukraine’s allies as the conflict with Russia enters another phase.

The approval of Koretskyi’s cabinet marks one of the most significant political developments in Ukraine’s wartime leadership structure, placing a new prime minister at the centre of efforts to guide the country through ongoing security and reconstruction challenges.
