Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has held high-level talks with Africa’s richest businessman, Aliko Dangote, in a meeting widely seen as reinforcing Tanzania’s ambition to position itself as one of East Africa’s leading destinations for industrial investment and energy development.

The meeting, held at the State House in Dar es Salaam on Sunday, brought together senior members of the Tanzanian government and executives from the Dangote Group, highlighting the growing strategic relationship between the East African nation and one of Africa’s largest private business empires.

It marked the second meeting between President Samia and the Nigerian billionaire in just over a month, following their previous discussions on May 16, signalling sustained engagement on projects considered important to Tanzania’s long-term economic transformation.

Among those attending were Minister for Planning and Investment Professor Kitila Mkumbo, Minister for Energy Deogratius Ndejembi, Minister for Industry and Trade Judith Kapinga, as well as senior officials overseeing Tanzania’s petroleum, natural gas and energy sectors.

While officials did not immediately disclose the full agenda of the discussions, the presence of senior government leaders responsible for investment, industry and energy suggests the talks centred on expanding cooperation in strategic sectors that are expected to drive Tanzania’s economic growth over the coming decade.

Dangote’s business interests in Tanzania have become increasingly significant through investments in manufacturing, construction materials and regional trade. His flagship cement operations in the country form part of a wider industrial network spanning several African markets and have contributed to Tanzania’s growing industrial capacity.

The renewed engagement comes as President Samia’s administration continues implementing an investment-driven economic strategy aimed at attracting foreign capital, expanding industrial production and strengthening Tanzania’s position as a regional manufacturing and logistics hub.

Since taking office, President Samia has pursued policies intended to improve the business environment, deepen economic diplomacy and encourage greater private-sector participation in infrastructure, energy and industrial development.

Analysts say repeated meetings between the Head of State and one of Africa’s most influential investors reflect Tanzania’s determination to cultivate long-term partnerships capable of accelerating job creation, technology transfer and value-added manufacturing.

The discussions also come at a time when competition among African countries to attract large-scale private investment has intensified, particularly in sectors linked to energy security, industrialisation and regional supply chains.

For Dangote, whose conglomerate operates across cement, fertiliser, oil refining, logistics and other industries, Tanzania represents one of the continent’s fastest-growing economies with increasing demand for infrastructure and industrial investment.

Although neither side announced new agreements following Sunday’s meeting, observers believe the continued high-level dialogue underscores mutual confidence in expanding economic cooperation.

As Tanzania advances its industrialisation agenda and seeks to attract greater international investment, the government appears determined to strengthen partnerships with African investors capable of supporting long-term economic transformation.

The meeting sends a broader signal that Tanzania intends to deepen its role as a destination for strategic investment, with government and private-sector leaders working to unlock new opportunities in one of Africa’s fastest-evolving economies.
