President Mwinyi Pardons 33 Inmates for Revolution Anniversary

Zanzibar’s President and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has granted clemency to 33 inmates as part of the 61st anniversary celebrations of the Zanzibar Revolution.

According to an official statement issued on January 11, 2025, by Charles Hilary, the Chief Spokesperson of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, the pardon includes 25 inmates from Unguja and 8 from Pemba.

This gesture aligns with an established annual tradition in Zanzibar, where the President extends clemency to select prisoners during significant national celebrations. The act aims to reflect the spirit of unity, compassion, and the progressive ideals that the revolution symbolizes.

President Mwinyi exercised his authority under Article 59 of the 1984 Zanzibar Constitution, which empowers the Head of State to pardon any individual convicted of an offense. The provision allows the President to reduce, amend, or entirely waive sentences as deemed appropriate.

In granting the pardon, Dr. Mwinyi underscored the importance of rehabilitation and reintegration of former inmates into society. The move is expected to give the beneficiaries a fresh start and encourage them to become responsible citizens who contribute positively to the nation’s development.
