Tanzania is preparing to honor the life and legacy of Edwin Mtei, a pioneering economist and opposition leader whose contributions helped shape the country’s democratic and financial institutions.
The funeral for the late Mtei is scheduled for Saturday, January 24, 2026, according to an initial schedule announced by senior opposition figure Freeman Mbowe, who is also a family representative.
Speaking to the media on January 21 at Mtei’s residence, Mbowe said funeral preparations are progressing steadily and that a full program will be released officially the following day. He emphasized that the ceremonies will be inclusive, reflecting Mtei’s far-reaching influence across political, financial, and social spheres in Tanzania.
Mbowe described the passing of Mtei as a loss not just for his family or his political party, but for the nation as a whole. He assured that everyone who had worked closely with Mtei, or had been influenced by his work, would have the opportunity to participate. The funeral will involve representatives from his party CHADEMA, other political parties, government officials, the central bank, and various social and civic organizations.
“This is not a private loss—it is a national moment,” Mbowe said, highlighting the broad respect Mtei commanded across Tanzania’s political spectrum. He also thanked citizens, government agencies, and civil society groups for standing with the family during this period of mourning.

Edwin Mtei, who passed away on January 19, 2026, at the age of 94, is remembered as a principled technocrat and ethical leader. He served as the first Governor of the Bank of Tanzania, where he helped lay the foundations of the country’s monetary system. Mtei became widely respected for his decision to resign after disagreements with national economic policies, a move that highlighted his commitment to professional integrity over personal gain.
In 1992, Mtei transitioned into opposition politics, founding CHADEMA and helping establish Tanzania’s multiparty political system. His leadership emphasized accountability, citizen empowerment, and economic policies that prioritized the welfare of Tanzanians.
Mbowe described the upcoming funeral as a reflection of Mtei’s values, calling it a “shared moment for all Tanzanians.” He also noted that the event will include tributes to Mtei’s lifelong dedication to public service, leadership, and mentorship of future generations. Observers say the funeral is likely to serve as a unifying moment, bringing together political figures and institutions that Mtei influenced throughout his career.
