The Speaker of Tanzania’s National Assembly, Mussa Azan Zungu, has confirmed the passing of Peramiho Member of Parliament Jenista Joakim Mhagama, who died earlier today in Dodoma, marking a deeply emotional moment for Parliament and the nation.

In his announcement, delivered with visible sorrow, the Speaker expressed heartfelt sympathy to all those affected by her death.
“It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of the Honourable Member of Parliament for Peramiho, Jenista Joakim Mhagama,” he said. “I extend my condolences to all Honourable Members, the family of the late Mhagama, her relatives, friends, and the people of Peramiho Constituency. May the Almighty grant them strength during this difficult time.”

Mhagama, a senior legislator known for her calm demeanor and strong commitment to public service, had earned respect across political divides. Throughout her career, she was widely recognized for championing community-driven development, women’s economic empowerment, and social welfare initiatives, especially in rural Tanzania.

Colleagues remember her as a thoughtful voice in the House—firm when necessary, but always respectful. Her long public-service journey included participation in several key committees and contributions to national policy debates, particularly those involving education, healthcare and local-government development. For many Tanzanians, she was more than a political figure; she was a symbol of dedication and humility.

The Parliamentary Office is currently working with the family to coordinate funeral arrangements, with further details expected to be released soon. According to parliamentary protocol, flags are expected to be flown at half-mast as part of the formal mourning period.

Tributes have already begun to pour in from across the country—from fellow lawmakers, community leaders, and residents of her Peramiho Constituency. Many expressed gratitude for her unwavering commitment to public service and her ability to connect with ordinary citizens.

Beyond her political legacy, Mhagama was admired for her personal integrity, compassion, and dedication to improving the welfare of marginalized communities. Her work, colleagues say, will continue to influence social-policy conversations for years to come.

As messages of comfort continue to flow, the Speaker concluded his statement with a solemn prayer: “May her soul rest in eternal peace.”

Her passing serves as a poignant reminder of the human side of leadership and the profound impact that dedicated public servants can have on the lives of those they serve.
