Four senior figures from Tanzania’s main opposition party, Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA), have been released on bail after spending several days in police custody.

The release has sparked cautious optimism among supporters who have been calling for greater political tolerance in the country.

Those freed include the party’s Deputy Chairperson for Mainland Tanzania, John Heche, Deputy Secretary-General Amani Golugwa, Central Committee Member Godbless Lema, and Coastal Zone Chairperson Boniface Jacob. The four were released from Oysterbay Police Station in Dar es Salaam late Monday evening, where they had been detained for questioning.

According to CHADEMA’s legal team, the leaders were granted bail under standard conditions, requiring them to report back to the authorities while investigations continue. Their release follows a tense week marked by political anxiety and growing public concern about the treatment of opposition figures in the aftermath of Tanzania’s general elections.

The four leaders had been taken into custody in connection with what police described as ongoing investigations into public unrest. Their arrests came just days after nationwide protests calling for electoral transparency, a move that drew criticism from civil society groups and human rights observers.

In a statement shared on social media, CHADEMA expressed relief over the release but urged authorities to ensure that all political activities remain peaceful and free from intimidation. The party emphasized that it remains committed to engaging in democratic dialogue while defending the rights of its members and supporters.

Analysts note that the incident underscores the fragile balance between political authority and civil liberty in Tanzania’s evolving democracy. While the release offers a temporary reprieve, many observers argue that deeper issues — including limits on opposition freedom and ongoing tensions between government and opposition supporters — still need to be addressed.

The atmosphere outside the police station on Monday evening was calm but charged with emotion, as supporters and family members welcomed the four leaders. “We are happy to see them free, even if only on bail,” one supporter said. “This is a small victory for justice, but the struggle for democracy continues.”

The police have not yet commented on whether the leaders will face formal charges. However, legal experts believe their release suggests a possible easing of tensions following international attention and calls for restraint.

Tanzania’s political environment has been under global scrutiny since the contested elections, which saw allegations of heavy-handed policing and mass detentions.
