The Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) is set to enhance service delivery in the Lake Zone with the construction of a new laboratory and office building.
The facility aims to bring testing and administrative services closer to residents and businesses, reducing the need to travel long distances for essential quality and standards checks.
TBS Chairman, Prof. Othman Chande, recently inspected the project and expressed optimism about its impact. He noted that the new building, equipped with modern laboratories, will allow for faster and more efficient testing, supporting both local and international standards compliance.
“Decentralizing our services is a key part of our strategy,” Prof. Chande said. “By situating this facility in the Lake Zone, we are making it easier for communities and industries in the region to access high-quality testing and certification services without unnecessary delays.”

Currently, residents and businesses often travel to the capital, Dar es Salaam, for certain laboratory services, which adds cost and time to operations. The new facility is expected to serve six regions: Mwanza, Kagera, Mara, Geita, Shinyanga, and Simiyu, strengthening the Bureau’s regional presence and supporting local industrial development.
The project is part of TBS’s wider efforts to improve infrastructure and service accessibility nationwide. Once completed, it will play a critical role in supporting Tanzania’s industrialization agenda, promoting economic growth, and ensuring that businesses and consumers in the Lake Zone can meet national and international standards efficiently.
