A total of 759 motorcycle taxi riders, also known as bodaboda operators, tragically lost their lives in road accidents between 2022 and 2024, according to recent statements from the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Daniel Sillo, shared this heartbreaking information on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, while responding to a question from Fatuma Hassan Toufiq, a Member of Parliament for special seats. The MP had asked how many people had died in motorcycle-related accidents over the past two years.

In his response, Sillo revealed that, in addition to the riders, 283 ordinary citizens had also lost their lives in bodaboda accidents during this period. This highlights the widespread impact of these accidents, which often affect both the riders and their passengers.

Bodabodas have become an essential mode of transport, especially in areas where other forms of transport are less accessible. However, the increasing number of accidents involving these motorcycles, largely due to reckless driving and lack of safety measures, has raised serious concerns across the country.

Sillo emphasized the government’s commitment to improving safety on the roads. He mentioned that efforts are underway to enforce stricter regulations for riders, including mandatory safety gear and initiatives aimed at raising awareness about road safety.

The tragic loss of so many lives has put the spotlight on the urgent need for better safety practices in the bodaboda sector. While steps are being taken to address these issues, the alarming statistics underline the growing urgency for a more effective approach to tackling road accidents involving motorcycles.
