The Tanzanian Ministry of Health has reassured the public that there are no shortages of antiretroviral (ARV) drugs used in the treatment of HIV/AIDS, dismissing recent rumors circulating on social media.
In a statement issued on February 8, 2025, the ministry clarified that reports suggesting patients are being forced to buy ARVs due to scarcity are completely unfounded and misleading.
The ministry acknowledged that misinformation about ARV supplies had caused unnecessary alarm, leading some individuals to hoard the drugs. However, the government cautioned that this panic-driven behavior could disrupt the proper use of the medications and ultimately harm patients.
The government emphasized that there is no need for concern about the availability of ARVs. “We assure the public that supplies are in place, and we continue to take every step to ensure that our citizens have access to the treatment they need,” the statement explained.

In addition, the Ministry of Health urged people to ignore the unverified reports and to continue taking ARVs as prescribed by healthcare professionals. Following the prescribed dosage is essential to prevent drug resistance and to ensure the treatment remains effective.
The government’s swift response is aimed at putting an end to the confusion caused by the misinformation, reinforcing its commitment to the health and well-being of Tanzanians living with HIV/AIDS. Through continuous efforts, the ministry is ensuring that there will be no disruption in the supply of vital medications.
