US Halts Aid to South Africa Over Land Seizures

The United States has announced an immediate suspension of foreign aid to South Africa, citing concerns over land seizures targeting the Afrikaner minority and Pretoria’s growing diplomatic ties with nations seen as hostile to American interests.

The decision, outlined in an executive order released on February 7, 2025, also directs U.S. agencies to prioritize the resettlement of Afrikaner refugees facing state-backed expropriation of their farmland.

The move follows the passage of South Africa’s Expropriation Act 13 of 2024, which allows the government to seize agricultural land without compensating its owners. The White House condemned the policy, arguing that it disproportionately affects Afrikaners and fits into a broader pattern of discrimination against minority groups in the country.

Beyond concerns over human rights, the White House statement pointed to Pretoria’s foreign policy decisions, particularly its legal action at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) accusing Israel of genocide while failing to hold Hamas accountable. The U.S. has also voiced unease over South Africa’s deepening ties with Iran, a nation Washington considers a major global security threat.

Under the new directive, all U.S. government aid to South Africa—except essential humanitarian assistance—will be suspended. Agencies such as the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) will cease financial support, while the Department of Homeland Security and the State Department will focus on resettling Afrikaners who face displacement.

“The United States cannot continue supporting a government engaged in systematic human rights violations while it undermines our foreign policy and security interests,” the statement read.

The decision is expected to strain relations between the two countries, especially as South Africa continues to solidify its position within BRICS—a coalition that includes China, Russia, and Iran. Analysts believe Pretoria may seek stronger economic partnerships with alternative allies in response to the U.S. sanctions.

With Washington’s decision marking a shift in U.S.-Africa relations, many are now watching closely to see how Pretoria will respond to the growing diplomatic pressure.
