Residents of Dar es Salaam have been encouraged to participate in fitness exercises held every Saturday at Tanzanite Bridge.

This initiative, aimed at improving public health and reducing non-communicable diseases, was highlighted during a recent gathering that brought together various jogging groups, Wasafi Media, Clouds through the community figure Babu wa Kitaa, the Anti-AIDS Organization (WAMATA), Zumba enthusiasts, families, and individuals alike.

Assistant Director for Non-Communicable Diseases at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Omary Ubuguyu, underscored the need for increased participation in these exercises. “The turnout remains low,” Dr. Ubuguyu stated, calling on diverse groups—including people with disabilities, senior citizens, and employees across institutions in Dar Es Salaam to join in the weekly sessions. “This initiative is vital in promoting fitness and overall community wellness.”

To amplify the call, Dr. Ubuguyu appealed to healthcare workers and stakeholders to actively encourage more residents to attend. The push aligns with the government’s vision of fostering a health-conscious society and reducing the strain of non-communicable diseases on public healthcare resources.

Adding his voice to the cause, the Chairman of the Tanzania Non-Communicable Diseases Alliance (TANCDA), Professor Andrew Swai, shared insights on the critical role of exercise in protecting health. At 74, Prof. Swai spoke from experience, emphasizing how daily exercise contributes to longevity and vitality. He assured the public that TANCDA would continue collaborating with the government to bolster awareness and mobilize community participation in this wellness initiative.

The exercises are coordinated by the Ministry of Health, TANCDA, and Wasafi Jogging Club, under the directive of Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa. His order mandates the temporary closure of the Tanzanite to Coco Beach road every Saturday from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., specifically to support community fitness.

This weekly road closure creates a dedicated space for residents to safely engage in fitness activities, a step seen as both progressive and inclusive for a bustling urban population.

The program aligns with the broader goal of promoting a healthy lifestyle among Tanzanians. Health officials hope that initiatives like these will inspire similar events across other cities, building a culture of wellness that spans the nation.
