Train Derailment Injures 70; Investigation Underway

A serious train derailment occurred involving passenger train Y14, which was traveling from Kigoma to multiple destinations including Tabora, Dodoma, Morogoro, Pwani, and Dar es Salaam.

The incident took place between Kazuramimba and Uvinza stations at approximately 7:30 PM.

The train, operated by the Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC), comprised 12 carriages, including a cargo carriage and a brake carriage, with a total of 571 passengers onboard. The derailment resulted in injuries to over 70 individuals. Emergency services responded promptly, transporting the injured to Uvinza Hospital for medical treatment.

Despite the severity of the accident, the train was able to resume its journey after the immediate emergency response was managed. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the derailment, with initial inquiries focusing on potential mechanical failures or track issues.

The TRC has committed to reviewing and enhancing safety measures to prevent future incidents.
