Tanzania is intensifying efforts to ensure the proposed Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) project begins implementation as soon as possible, while safeguarding national interests and ensuring that citizens benefit from the country’s natural gas resources.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy responsible for Oil and Natural Gas, Dr. James Mataragio, said the government was conducting careful negotiations to ensure the project delivers meaningful benefits to residents of Lindi Region and Tanzanians at large without compromising the country’s interests.

Dr. Mataragio made the remarks on October 26, 2026, during the inauguration of Likong’o Pre-Primary and Primary School in Lindi Region. The school was constructed through collaboration between the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) and investors involved in the LNG project under a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme.

He said significant progress had been made in negotiations on key aspects of the project, including commercial arrangements and taxation, while the proposed special legislation governing its implementation remained among the outstanding issues to be finalised.

According to Dr. Mataragio, discussions on the remaining matters are expected to continue soon in Arusha, with the objective of establishing a legal framework that protects the interests of the government, citizens and investors.

He explained that the proposed special law is expected to be tabled before the Parliament of the United Republic of Tanzania to provide a legal basis for overseeing the project over its planned 50-year period.

The legislation is expected to establish clear arrangements for the project’s implementation and provide a framework within which the government and investors can fulfil their respective obligations.

Dr. Mataragio stressed that the government wanted the final agreements to reflect the broader interests of Tanzanians, particularly communities in Lindi, while also creating a stable and predictable environment for investors.

He urged citizens to remain patient as the government continues working towards concluding negotiations, signing the necessary agreements and paving the way for implementation.

The proposed LNG project is considered strategically important to Tanzania because of the country’s substantial natural gas resources and the potential to expand energy-related investment, government revenues and employment opportunities.

If implemented, the project could strengthen Tanzania’s position in the global natural gas market while creating opportunities for local businesses and workers. However, its long-term contribution to national development will depend on the terms of the agreements, the management of environmental and social impacts, and the extent to which Tanzanians participate in the economic opportunities generated.

The government’s ongoing negotiations therefore represent a critical stage in determining how the project will balance investor confidence with public interests, national revenue objectives and benefits for communities hosting major energy infrastructure.

For residents of Lindi and the wider country, the completion of negotiations and the establishment of a clear legal framework will be important milestones towards determining when the long-awaited LNG project can move from planning to implementation.
