Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) has upgraded its eye care services with the introduction of advanced surgical technology, thanks to a donation of equipment worth TSh 68.2 million from Vision Care and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).
The new tools include a phacoemulsifier, which enables minimally invasive cataract surgeries, reducing recovery times for patients.
During a ceremony in Dar Es Salaam, ophthalmologist Dr. Joachim Kilemile explained that the equipment allows the hospital to perform surgeries using smaller incisions, improving efficiency and reducing the backlog of patients awaiting treatment. Cataracts, often linked to aging and diabetes, will now be addressed more effectively.
Fifty patients have already benefited from successful procedures using the new equipment. MNH is now the first public hospital in Tanzania to adopt this technology, positioning it as a leader in eye care and a potential hub for medical tourism.

Vision Care’s Resident Director, Mrs. Jieun Park, emphasized their commitment to further collaboration, which includes training local specialists and ongoing equipment support.
