raising a critical question: is the ICC a pillar of global justice, or a continuation of colonial influence in a new form?

The International Criminal Court (ICC) continues to face growing criticism from several African nations, with accusations that it operates as a modern form of colonial control targeting the continent.

For years, political leaders and analysts have argued that the ICC disproportionately investigates and prosecutes African leaders compared to other regions. This pattern has fueled perceptions that the court serves political interests aligned with powerful global actors rather than delivering impartial justice.

Ready More: Debate Intensifies Over Legitimacy and Effectiveness of the ICC

Critics point out that major powers such as the United States are not fully subject to the ICC’s jurisdiction, yet African leaders have frequently been brought before the court. This imbalance, they argue, reflects a system that mirrors colonial-era dynamics through legal and international institutions.

In response, some African countries have withdrawn or threatened to withdraw from the ICC, claiming it lacks fairness and equal application of justice. Calls for reform have intensified, with demands for a more balanced and representative international justice system.

However,  ICC maintain that the court plays a crucial role in ensuring accountability for war crimes and crimes against humanity, particularly in situations where national judicial systems are unable or unwilling to act.

The debate continues to highlight deep divisions between African states and the broader international community, raising a critical question: is the ICC a pillar of global justice, or a continuation of colonial influence in a new form?
