The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, Dr. Doto Biteko, has emphasized the importance of recognizing and utilizing the work of Tanzanian scientists to address the country’s challenges.
He pointed out that it’s crucial for the government, institutions, and organizations to acknowledge the valuable research being done locally and incorporate it into solving national issues.
Dr. Biteko shared these thoughts today while representing President Samia Suluhu Hassan at the opening of the 9th Science, Technology, Innovation, and Exhibition Conference in Dar es Salaam. The conference brings together experts, researchers, and innovators from across Tanzania to discuss how science and technology can be harnessed to solve some of the country’s most pressing problems.
During his speech, Dr. Biteko praised the work being done by Tanzanian scientists, noting that they are dedicated to finding solutions to various social and environmental challenges. However, he also pointed out that their research often gains more recognition outside of Tanzania than within the country. This, he said, can be discouraging for local researchers who may feel their efforts are not fully appreciated at home.
“This conference is an opportunity to talk about the challenges we face and how to overcome them,” Dr. Biteko said. “We need to make better use of the research coming from our own scientists. Instead of discouraging them, we should be supporting them, giving them the resources they need to keep going. The results will speak for themselves.”
He also stressed that the government is fully aware of the importance of science and technology in solving the country’s problems. To support this, Dr. Biteko highlighted the significant funding allocated to research and innovation by the Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH), which has recently allocated 32 billion Tanzanian shillings for research and innovation projects across the country. This investment is part of the government’s broader push to invest in science and make sure local solutions are found to address the nation’s challenges.

Dr. Biteko’s words come at a time when there is an increasing recognition of the role that science and technology can play in driving sustainable development. Tanzania’s scientific community holds immense potential, and the government is working to foster an environment where researchers can thrive and contribute to the country’s growth.
The ongoing conference is an important platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and showcasing innovative solutions, with participants exploring ways to address issues in various sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, and infrastructure. It aims to strengthen the relationship between researchers, policymakers, and the private sector to push forward Tanzania’s development goals.
Dr. Biteko’s message was clear: it’s time for Tanzania to invest more in its own scientists and make use of their research to find practical solutions for the country. With the government’s increased support for science and technology, the future looks promising, and Tanzanians can look forward to a brighter, more innovative tomorrow.
