The former Mayor of Ubungo and a prominent political figure,  Boniface Jacob  has spoken publicly for the first time following his release from remand.

Jacob, who had been in custody for nearly 20 days, was granted bail by the Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court after facing charges related to publishing false information online. His defense successfully argued for his release despite objections from the prosecution, and Resident Magistrate Franco Kiswaga ultimately approved the bail. Jacob’s case is set to continue with the next hearing scheduled for October 21, 2024.

After his release, Jacob addressed the media, reflecting on his time in remand, which he described as a transformative experience. He announced his intention to pay fines for 10 prisoners who are unable to afford their release and to provide legal aid to 20 more, including hiring lawyers to assist with their defense. Jacob remarked, “I entered as an ordinary prisoner, but I leave as the Chairman for the Coastal Zone through the Democratic Change Party.” His words were seen as a testament to his resilience and newfound purpose.

Jacob’s arrest had sparked significant public interest, particularly because of his role as a well-known political figure. His supporters had raised concerns about the charges, which include publishing allegedly false information on social media. These charges have been part of an ongoing debate about the regulation of online content and freedom of expression in the country.

Jacob’s legal team expressed confidence in his defense, insisting that the accusations were politically motivated. They also underscored the humanitarian actions Jacob plans to undertake, demonstrating his commitment to using his platform to support others.

His decision to assist prisoners reflects broader concerns in Tanzania about the treatment of inmates, especially those unable to pay minor fines. Jacob’s initiative mirrors the work of various legal aid campaigns in the country, such as the ongoing efforts by the Mama Samia Legal Aid Campaign, which has provided free legal assistance to many inmates. His announcement signals a shift in his public role, from a political leader to a figure advocating for justice reform.

Jacob’s case will now proceed to the next phase, with his legal team preparing for the continuation of the trial. In the meantime, his focus on supporting other prisoners has garnered praise, both from his supporters and human rights advocates.
