The Civil Society Organization, HakiElimu, has unveiled a comprehensive report addressing the availability of quality education for children residing in informal settlements in urban areas.
The report aims to enhance education accessibility for this demographic in Tanzania.
The research, conducted by HakiElimu in collaboration with the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC), focused on exploring the challenges and opportunities faced by children living in informal settlements, particularly in major cities like Dar es Salaam and Dodoma. The study offers insights into the barriers and prospects concerning education for children in informal urban settings.
During the launch event, Mr. Ephraim Simbeye, the Director of Quality Assurance at the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology, representing Minister Prof. Adolf Mkenda, emphasized the report’s significance in shaping education policies. He highlighted the Education Sector Development Plan for the Five Years, which addresses challenges in urban education.
Dr. John Kalage, the Director of HakiElimu, explained that the research aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of urban education and to promote urban education as an academic and research focus.

Mr. Francis Kiroro, representing APHRC, outlined the reasons for selecting urban areas for the research, citing the projected urban population increase by 2050. He stressed the importance of sustainable strategies to address education needs in urban poor areas.
Report offers recommendations and insights to empower education stakeholders and the government to make evidence-based decisions. HakiElimu and its partners pledge continued efforts to enhance education for children in disadvantaged urban environments.
