Senior football and government officials from East Africa have intensified preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), as regional leaders reaffirm their commitment to delivering one of the most ambitious tournaments in the competition’s history.
The high-level meeting, held on April 23, 2026, in Kampala, brought together key stakeholders from Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda, the three nations set to jointly host the 2027 tournament.
Among those in attendance was Samson Adamu, Secretary General of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), alongside senior government representatives and sports officials from the host countries. Tanzania was represented by Deputy Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports Hamis Mwinjuma, while Kenya and Uganda were represented by their respective sports ministers, including Salim Mvurya and Peter Ogwang.
The discussions focused on critical areas necessary for successfully hosting the continental tournament, including infrastructure development, security planning, coordination of organizing committees, and alignment with international hosting standards.
Officials emphasized that the 2027 AFCON, scheduled to take place from June 19 to July 18, represents a historic milestone for East Africa. It will be the first time in decades that the region hosts Africa’s premier football competition, offering a unique opportunity to showcase its capacity to organize large-scale international sporting events.
A central focus of the meeting was infrastructure readiness. Leaders reviewed progress on stadium upgrades, construction of training facilities, and improvements in transport networks and accommodation services. These developments are considered essential not only for the tournament but also for long-term national and regional development.
CAF officials stressed the importance of meeting strict international standards to ensure a seamless tournament experience for players, officials, and fans. This includes compliance with technical requirements for stadiums, security protocols, and logistical coordination across borders.

Security planning also featured prominently in the discussions, with leaders highlighting the need for joint strategies to ensure the safety of participants and spectators. Given the cross-border nature of the tournament, cooperation between national security agencies will be critical.
Beyond infrastructure and security, the meeting underscored the importance of institutional coordination. Officials called for stronger collaboration between governments, national football federations, and CAF to ensure efficient decision-making and timely implementation of projects.
The co-hosting arrangement itself reflects a growing trend toward regional integration in sports. By working together, Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda aim to share resources, distribute hosting responsibilities, and maximize the economic and social benefits of the tournament.
Leaders also highlighted the broader impact of AFCON 2027, noting that the event is expected to boost tourism, create employment opportunities, and accelerate investment in sports infrastructure. Additionally, it is seen as a platform to inspire youth participation in sports and strengthen the region’s global sporting profile.
