The Minister of Industry and Trade, Dr. Seleman Jafo (MP), has instructed the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Industry and Trade to form a team of eight people. This team will work in collaboration with the regional administration and the Treasury Registrar (TR) to assess underperforming industries in the Morogoro Region and determine how to revive them and restart production, including the Mkwawa Tobacco Leaf Co Ltd factory.
Dr. Jafo issued this directive on July 20, 2024, during his one-day working visit to the Morogoro Region. During his visit, he toured Alliance One, Mkwawa Tobacco Leaf Co Ltd, Mazava Fabrics and Production East Africa Ltd, and MW Rice Mills Ltd (KORIE).
Dr. Jafo stated that the Ministry of Industry and Trade plans to restore the Morogoro Region to its former status as an industrial hub to provide employment opportunities for young people and increase the region’s revenue. “I instruct the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Industry and Trade to form a team of approximately eight people, including regional representatives and the Treasury Registrar (TR), to assess underperforming industries and ensure they emulate the successful example of Mkwawa Tobacco Leaf Co Ltd” emphasized Dr. Jafo.
Additionally, Dr. Jafo praised the management of Mkwawa Tobacco Leaf Co Ltd for their significant investment, encouraging other industries to follow their example. The factory currently provides 600 direct jobs and over 3,000 seasonal jobs, reducing youth unemployment in the area.
The Minister also urged other regions in the country to oversee and coordinate long-dormant industries to ensure they resume production of goods that can compete in the international market.
Representing the Regional Commissioner of Morogoro, the District Commissioner of Morogoro, Ms. Rebeca Nsemwa, thanked Minister Jafo for his visit, stating that it would address challenges facing the industrial sector in the region.
