The disappearance and subsequent discovery of Jackson Ngowi’s body in a remote farmland in Ngambeni Village has sparked significant concern and highlights broader issues facing boda boda riders.

The 24-year-old’s body, found decomposed five days after he was last seen, underscores the dangers associated with this profession.

Ngowi was last seen on July 14, 2024, after being hired by an unknown passenger, a routine occurrence for the boda boda community. Colleagues assumed it was a typical fare, but Ngowi’s failure to return raised alarms.

A search effort was initiated, involving both the local community and police, but tragically, his body was found abandoned on July 19, 2024.

This incident isn’t isolated. Boda boda riders frequently face significant risks, ranging from road accidents to targeted attacks. In Uganda, for instance, a recent insurance policy has been introduced to offer some protection for riders and passengers, addressing medical expenses and accident coverage.

This initiative, spearheaded by Liberty Insurance and Stanbic Bank Assurance, aims to mitigate the financial burdens that follow such tragedies

The boda boda sector, while providing essential transport services, remains perilous. Riders are urged to adopt safety measures and utilize available insurance covers to safeguard their welfare. Authorities continue to investigate Ngowi’s death, with hopes of bringing those responsible to justice and preventing similar incidents in the future.
