Mbeya Invites Investors to Build Modern Slaughterhouse in Ilemi

November 4, 2026

Mbeya City Council has invited investors and private sector stakeholders to participate in the construction of a modern slaughterhouse in Ilemi through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement aimed at improving meat safety, strengthening the livestock value chain and boosting the local economy.

Mbeya City Mayor Dormohamed Issa made the call on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, during the opening of a project introduction meeting held in Mbeya City. The meeting brought together representatives from the Prime Minister’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (PMO-RALG), as well as the Public-Private Partnership Centre (PPP Centre).

Issa said the proposed project seeks to replace the existing slaughterhouse, which no longer meets the required standards for modern meat processing, hygiene and public health.

He explained that the new facility is expected to improve the quality and safety of meat supplied to consumers by ensuring proper inspection, hygienic slaughtering procedures and compliance with relevant health and safety standards.

According to the mayor, the project will also create greater economic opportunities within the livestock sector by adding value to livestock products, improving market access for livestock keepers and supporting the growth of livestock-related businesses.

The mayor noted that the introductory meeting forms part of Mbeya City Council’s broader efforts, in collaboration with PMO-RALG, to identify capable and experienced investors interested in implementing major strategic development projects through the PPP framework.

He encouraged potential investors to contribute ideas and recommendations on the proposed project’s structure, investment capacity, allocation of responsibilities and sustainable management arrangements.

The PPP model is expected to provide an opportunity for the public and private sectors to combine resources, technical expertise and management capacity in delivering essential infrastructure while sharing investment responsibilities and project risks.

Modern slaughterhouses play an important role in livestock development by providing controlled environments for slaughtering, veterinary inspection, meat processing and waste management. They also help reduce public health risks associated with unhygienic meat handling and the consumption of uninspected meat.

For Mbeya, the proposed Ilemi facility could strengthen the city’s livestock trade and meat supply chain while creating opportunities for employment, investment and improved services for livestock keepers, traders, meat processors and consumers.

The council’s engagement with potential investors marks an important step towards developing a modern facility that meets required standards and supports the long-term growth of Mbeya’s livestock economy.
