The contractor implementing the 28 Towns Water Supply Project in Kayanga, Karagwe District, has been directed to ensure residents begin receiving reliable water services by December 2026.

Deputy Minister for Water, Eng. Kundo Andrea Mathew, issued the directive during an inspection of the project, which is being implemented by AFCON Infrastructure Limited and India’s Vijera Projects and Infrastructure Limited.

Eng. Kundo commended the contractors for the progress achieved, noting that the project had previously experienced unsatisfactory progress during his last inspection.

“The last time I visited this site, progress was not good. However, today I commend you for the good work, as the project has reached a promising stage. I now direct you to ensure the project starts providing services by December 2026,” he said.

The project, which draws water from Lake Rwakajunju, has reached 79.82 per cent completion, with a total investment of 64.32 billion Tanzanian shillings.

Once operational, the project is expected to address persistent water shortages affecting approximately 352,790 residents in Kayanga town and 29 villages across Karagwe District.

According to the project details, the initiative is expected to increase water service coverage to 100 per cent from the current 65 per cent, significantly improving access to safe and reliable water for households and communities.

The December 2026 deadline is intended to ensure that residents begin benefiting from the investment, which is expected to improve living standards, support public health and reduce the burden of searching for water.

The directive places the contractors under pressure to complete the remaining works and make the water supply system operational within the stipulated timeframe.
