Tanzania’s Deputy Minister for Water, Engineer Kundo Mathew, has ordered MEGHA Engineering and Infrastructure to ensure water services begin reaching residents of Urambo within seven days, following delays in the implementation of a major water supply project in Tabora Region.
Engineer Kundo issued the directive while inspecting the implementation of the 28 Towns Water Project and the construction of the Kalemeni water dam.

He instructed the contractor to accelerate the installation of water pipes and complete the remaining works within the set deadline, stressing that residents should not continue waiting for essential water services.
“Seven days are enough to complete the pipe-laying activities. There should be no excuses. Increase the pace of implementation so that residents can start receiving water services,” Kundo said.

The 28 Towns Water Project covers Urambo, Sikonge and Kaliua and is valued at 143 billion Tanzanian shillings. According to the project details provided during the inspection, implementation has reached 79.2 per cent.
Once completed, the project is expected to produce 24.76 million litres of water and benefit approximately 490,926 people across the three districts, including residents of 63 villages located along the main water pipeline.
The project is intended to improve access to clean and reliable water, reduce the burden on households that struggle to obtain the essential resource and support public health and local economic activities.
The seven-day deadline places pressure on the contractor to complete the outstanding works and begin delivering services to residents of Urambo. The inspection also highlighted the importance of completing the Kalemeni dam and associated infrastructure to support the wider water supply system.
The government’s directive reflects its push to accelerate water infrastructure projects and ensure that public investments translate into tangible benefits for communities.
Successful completion of the remaining works will be critical in determining how quickly residents in the project areas can access the promised water supply.
