Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals, Subira Mgalu, has commended the Ministry of Energy and Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) for implementing the Committee’s directive to strengthen cooperation between the energy and minerals sectors in addressing power supply challenges facing mining operations.
Mgalu made the remarks on September 3, 2026, in Dodoma during a ceremony to sign a contract for the construction of the 220-kilovolt (kV) Mponvu–GGM transmission line and a substation to be built at the GGM mining area in Geita Region.
She said she was pleased with the steps taken by the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Minerals to implement the Committee’s recommendations, particularly efforts to ensure reliable electricity supply for small-, medium- and large-scale mining operations.
“We are encouraged to see the directives we issued during the Committee meeting being implemented. Cooperation between the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Minerals has enabled this major step towards providing reliable electricity to mining areas through a project worth more than Sh63 billion,” Mgalu said.

She also recalled the Committee’s visit to the Mponvu Substation in Geita on March 15, 2026, where members, accompanied by Deputy Minister for Energy Salome Makamba, witnessed more than Sh50 billion in government investment in electricity infrastructure under the Sixth Phase Government.
Mgalu said construction of the new 220kV transmission line, which will provide GGM mines with a more reliable power supply, represents an important step towards improving the efficiency and productivity of mining operations.
“Reliable electricity will enable mines to operate more efficiently, increase production and ultimately contribute to the growth of the national economy through the mining sector,” she said.
The Committee chairperson also praised TANESCO and its Board of Directors for their efforts to improve electricity services across the country, linking the initiatives to the utility’s slogan, “Tunaangaza Maisha Yako” (“We Light Up Your Life”).
She said efforts to strengthen reliable electricity supply were essential to building a modern economy and achieving Tanzania’s national development objectives under Tanzania Development Vision 2050.
The Mponvu–GGM transmission project is expected to strengthen electricity infrastructure in the Geita mining area and support more reliable power availability for mining activities, contributing to increased productivity and economic growth.
