Tanzania has begun strategic preparations to strengthen security ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with the government emphasising the importance of specialised training, modern technology and lessons from major international sporting events.
AFCON 2027 will be jointly hosted by Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda, bringing thousands of players, officials, visitors and football fans to the region.
Speaking at the conclusion of a five-day security preparedness training programme, Dar es Salaam Special Police Zone Commander and Chairperson of the AFCON 2027 Security Committee, Muliro Jumanne Muliro, said specialised nuclear security training had enabled Tanzania to assess its preparedness and identify areas requiring further improvement ahead of the tournament.
He said the training brought together experts from Tanzania, the United States, Ghana, Morocco and Côte d’Ivoire, with the aim of strengthening participants’ ability to detect, prevent and respond to potential security threats that could arise during large public gatherings.

Participants also conducted practical exercises in environments designed to simulate sports stadiums and other major-event settings, allowing security personnel to prepare for a range of challenges that could emerge during the continental tournament.
“We know our own capabilities and we know that we need equipment, training and more exercises. Through this kind of training and practical exercises, together with cooperation with international experts, we have an opportunity to assess ourselves and identify what more needs to be done,” Muliro said.
He stressed that securing AFCON 2027 would not be the responsibility of security and defence agencies alone, but would require cooperation from citizens, government institutions and other stakeholders.
Muliro said public participation and cooperation would be essential in maintaining a safe environment throughout the tournament, particularly given the large number of people expected to attend matches and related events.
The security preparations are part of Tanzania’s broader efforts to ensure that the country is fully prepared to host one of Africa’s biggest sporting events.
Authorities are expected to continue strengthening coordination, personnel training, technology and operational preparedness as the tournament approaches.
The joint hosting of AFCON 2027 by Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda is expected to provide an opportunity for the three East African countries to demonstrate their capacity to successfully host major international sporting competitions while ensuring the safety and security of players, visitors, fans and local communities.
