The Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party has officially expelled Dr. Nchimbi following allegations of misconduct. This decision comes in the wake of a thorough review of his actions, which were deemed inconsistent with the party’s values and standards.
Speaking today, August 26, 2026, at the CCM Headquarters’ Lumumba office in Dar es Salaam,the Secretary-General Dr Asha-Rose Migiro said the decision was reached by the party’s organs, including the Central Committee, as part of disciplinary and ethical measures taken against some party members.
The former Vice President announced he is resignation weeks after it was reported that he had fallen out with President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

The 54-year-old Dr. Nchimbi announced his resignation via a brief letter posted on his Instagram account, expressing his desire to honor the president’s wishes. Sources from both his office and the presidency confirmed this development.
Nchimbi stated that he would retire from public life at the end of next week, making him the first vice president in the history of the East African nation to step down less than 10 months after taking office.
He served as Samia’s running mate in the contentious presidential election last October, which resulted in hundreds of fatalities due to post-election unrest.
The duo was sworn in last November after securing 98% of the vote.
Following the election, violent protests erupted, leading to the deaths of at least 500 individuals, according to an official inquiry.
Opposition parties and human rights organizations accused security forces of conducting a harsh crackdown on anti-government demonstrators.
In his resignation letter, Nchimbi wrote, “I have become convinced, without doubt, that the president wants changes, and I have therefore decided to fulfill my promise,” referring to his commitment to Samia that he would step down if she preferred a different deputy.
Dr. Nchimbi was elected as Vice President in November 2022, alongside President Samia Suluhu Hassan, following a controversial presidential election in October that resulted in significant unrest and violence, claiming hundreds of lives. The election was marked by accusations of a brutal crackdown on anti-government protests by security forces.
During his brief tenure, Dr. Nchimbi faced numerous challenges, particularly in restoring public trust and governance in the aftermath of the election turmoil. His leadership was characterized by efforts to promote stability and unity within the country.
