A quiet village in Tanzania’s Coast Region has been left reeling after a heartbreaking family tragedy in which a 16-year-old girl is accused of killing her own mother following an argument over attending a friend’s birthday party.
The incident, which remained hidden for more than three weeks before being discovered, has stunned residents and reignited public debate about family conflict, youth mental well-being, and the importance of early intervention in domestic disputes.
Police have identified the suspect as Rahma Tito, a 16-year-old resident of Msoga Village in Chalinze District, while the deceased has been identified as Hadija Shaha, 51, who reportedly lived with a disability affecting both of her legs.
According to preliminary police investigations, the incident allegedly occurred on the night of July 7, 2026, after a disagreement arose between the mother and daughter. Authorities say the teenager wanted permission to attend a birthday celebration being held near Msoga Hospital, but her mother reportedly refused to allow her to go.
Investigators believe the disagreement escalated into a violent confrontation inside the family’s home. Police allege that the teenager attacked her mother before fatally striking her in the head with a sharp object. Because the victim had limited mobility due to her disability, investigators are also examining whether she was able to defend herself during the attack.
What has shocked investigators even more is that the alleged crime reportedly went undiscovered for 22 days.
Police said the incident only came to light on the morning of July 29, when a construction worker arrived at the family’s house to collect payment and pick up a bag of cement for an ongoing building project.
According to authorities, Rahma opened the door for the worker, who became suspicious after entering the house and discovered the body of Hadija Shaha lying on the floor with serious head injuries. He immediately alerted local authorities, prompting police officers to rush to the scene.
The body was taken to Msoga Hospital for a post-mortem examination before being released to relatives for burial.
Police have since placed the teenager in custody while detectives continue interviewing witnesses, collecting forensic evidence, and reconstructing the events leading up to the alleged killing. Authorities say the suspect will appear before court once investigations are complete.
The incident has sent shockwaves through Msoga Village, where neighbors described the family as relatively quiet. Residents expressed disbelief that such a tragedy could occur within the home without attracting attention for several weeks.
Community leaders have called for stronger family support systems and increased awareness of conflict resolution, particularly among young people. They say misunderstandings between parents and children should never be allowed to escalate into violence, urging families to seek mediation through relatives, religious leaders, or local authorities whenever serious disagreements arise.

The case has become one of the most disturbing domestic homicide investigations reported in Coast Region this year, not only because of the relationship between the suspect and the victim but also because of the length of time that passed before the alleged crime was discovered.
As investigators work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident, the tragedy serves as a painful reminder of the devastating consequences that unresolved family disputes can have. Authorities continue to stress that the suspect is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
