Tanzania Praises Citizens For Choosing Peace Over Protests

Officials say the success of such events depends heavily on a stable environment that encourages participation from both local and international stakeholders.

Tanzania’s government has renewed its call for citizens to protect the country’s peace and stability, saying a calm social environment remains essential for economic growth, investment and national development.

Chief Government Spokesperson Gerson Msigwa made the remarks during a visit to the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports pavilion at the 50th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (Sabasaba), where he praised citizens for what he described as their continued commitment to maintaining national harmony.

Msigwa said peace is one of Tanzania’s most valuable assets, arguing that economic progress depends on an environment where businesses can operate, investors can make decisions confidently and citizens can continue with productive activities.

He urged Tanzanians to remain focused on building the economy through work, entrepreneurship and innovation, warning that actions capable of disrupting public order could affect development efforts and opportunities available to citizens.

“Peace is the foundation of development. When a country is peaceful, people are able to engage in economic activities, attract investment and create opportunities for future generations,” Msigwa said.

The remarks come amid increased public discussion on political participation, citizens’ rights and the role of peaceful expression in national affairs. Authorities have continued to emphasise the importance of maintaining security and avoiding actions they believe could threaten public safety.

Government officials say Tanzania’s economic transformation requires stability, particularly as the country seeks to attract more domestic and foreign investment, expand industries, increase trade and strengthen its position as a regional economic hub in East Africa.

Sabasaba, which marks its 50th anniversary this year, has provided a platform for thousands of businesses, investors and government institutions to showcase products, services and investment opportunities. Officials say the success of such events depends heavily on a stable environment that encourages participation from both local and international stakeholders.

Beyond trade exhibitions, Tanzania has positioned peace and security as important factors in its long-term development strategy. The country has traditionally promoted national unity and peaceful coexistence as part of its identity since independence, with successive governments highlighting stability as a foundation for progress.

Economic experts note that political and social stability often influences investor confidence, tourism growth and business expansion. They argue that countries with predictable environments are more likely to attract capital, create employment opportunities and support sustainable economic development.

However, analysts also emphasise that lasting stability requires continued dialogue between governments, citizens, political actors and other stakeholders to address national concerns through peaceful and constructive engagement.

Msigwa’s message reflects the government’s broader position that citizens should prioritise activities that contribute to economic advancement while protecting the country’s long-standing reputation for peace in the region.

As Tanzania continues pursuing industrialisation, infrastructure development and increased regional trade, authorities say maintaining peace will remain a central responsibility shared by both government institutions and citizens.

The government has urged Tanzanians to continue participating in economic activities, supporting national development programmes and preserving the social cohesion that it says has helped the country maintain stability for decades.
