Police in Kenya are investigating a shocking and violent attack in which a woman was set on fire in the capital, with early findings suggesting the assault may have been politically motivated, raising alarm over growing risks linked to political expression in public and online spaces.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, the victim was attacked in Nairobi’s Mwiki area by unidentified assailants who allegedly ambushed her, doused her with petrol, and set her ablaze in what investigators describe as a highly coordinated and targeted act of violence.
The woman, who had previously attracted attention on social media after displaying a tattoo featuring President William Ruto alongside political messages on her body, suffered catastrophic injuries. Medical officials estimate burns covering approximately 70 percent of her body.
She was initially admitted to Uzima Uhai Hospital before being transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital, where she remains in critical condition under intensive specialist care for severe burn trauma.
Police said preliminary assessments suggest the attack may be linked to political sentiments associated with the victim’s public expression, although investigators cautioned that the inquiry remains open and other possible motives are still being considered.
Detectives are currently reviewing surveillance footage from the surrounding area, interviewing witnesses, and tracking potential suspects believed to have fled the scene shortly after the incident. Authorities have not announced any arrests.
The case has triggered widespread public outrage and renewed debate in Kenya over political tolerance, personal safety, and the risks faced by individuals whose political views become widely visible online.
